What is the best way to get started with testing my samples?
The best way to get your samples tested is to click on the Submit a Sample button located on the top left-hand corner of every page on our website. You will be directed to our Client Portal where you can obtain an account and access your finalized results, ask the lab a question, and submit samples at any time! If you are a new NSF Authentechnologies client, click “Don’t have an account? Get Started”. From there you can make an account to submit your sample. If you have any questions, please always feel free to e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are a returning client, please login to your account and submit your sample.
Is this technology new? Did you invent it?
Our technology isn’t new, nor did we invent it. However, we did hone it for commercial application. For the last 30 plus years every major university with a botany program has used DNA testing to determine what makes a species in the first place making this type of testing the best way to identify species.
How Much Does Testing Cost?
Target Specific DNA Sequencing (TSDS™) costs $395 for the first species in a sample for standard turnaround times and $145 for each additional species in the same sample. Clean Screen is $495 as a standalone test or $295 if done in conjunction with an identity test.

How long does testing take?
Standard turnaround time is 10 business days from the receipt of your sample. Rush turnaround time is between 5-7 business days, depending on receipt of your sample. How much material do you need to test?
In most cases, as little as 100 milligrams of dried or fresh material is sufficient for each test. We recommend sending in no more than 2 tablespoons of material.
What validation work was done on the methodology and what is the confidence level of the testing?
All work done by AuthenTechnologies is FDA cGMP compliant. In fact, the FDA is a client. Our methods are all developed in-house and validated using AOAC International validation guidelines, which was co-authored by our CEO, Dr. Danica Reynaud. Confidence criteria for our testing was developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which currently provides DNA authenticated SRMs, developed by AuthenTechnologies.
What type of material can you test?
AuthenTechnologies DNA testing services are appropriate for a wide variety of materials and finished products, including virtually any species of plant, algae, animal, bacterial or fungal species, and complex blends and mixtures. Virtually any part of the organism can be tested. Even finished products and botanical extracts may be appropriate for testing, depending on the specific nature of the materials and manufacturing processes. Click here for more information.
Can DNA testing be performed on extracts?
Yes! In fact,, we are the only testing lab in the world that offers DNA extract testing. Our proprietary process called: Target Specific DNA Sequencing (TSDS) allows us to identify small fragments of DNA within botanical extracts with a 70% success rate! Our methods were developed through funding by NIH and by our CEO, Dr. Danica Reynaud, who has worked with ancient DNA at the Smithsonian Institution. My company already conducts chemical testing, why would we also use DNA testing?
There is no better way to do identity testing on botanicals than with DNA. We recommend using DNA to verify the true identity of material BEFORE doing chemical testing. Once you’re sure you have the right material, chemical testing is ideal for finding your chemical markers.
Isn’t chemical testing enough?
No, oddly chemical testing can’t actually identify a plant. It is ideal for finding chemical markers within plant material however, that isn’t actually identifying anything. Unlawful individuals figured this out decades ago and have fooling chemical tests by “spiking” them with the desired chemicals to sell useless material for a profit. DNA testing is not effected by spiking and cannot be fooled.
How do I submit samples for testing?
Due to the sensitive nature of DNA testing, precautions to prevent contamination of samples while preparing them is critical. Remember to avoiding heat and moisture sources when packaging a sample for testing. Samples can be sent in sterile tubes, envelopes, or bags. How are the results provided?
Upon completion of testing, a Certificate of Analysis will be sent electronically to contacts of your choosing. This certificate will be analyzed, verified and signed by one of our trained scientists. Is this DNA barcoding?
No, this is not barcoding. DNA barcoding is a popular term but is not fit for purpose with any material that has been processed, mixed, heated or treated. For this reason barcoding results consistently provide false negatives and positives on anything that isn’t freshly picked or animal. However, the term “barcoding” is used synonymously and incorrectly with “DNA Testing”. AuthenTechnologies uses our proprietary Target Specific DNA Sequencing (TSDS) method which is much more specific, sensitive and sophisticated than barcoding.
Where do you get your Reference Materials?
We have unique partnerships with some of the nation’s leading academic and research institutions, including Harvard University, UC Berkeley, and NY Botanical Gardens to gather the best reference materials in the world- whole plant vouchers that are authenticated by Ph.D. botanists. Over the last 6 years we’ve build our proprietary sequence database for nearly all commercially traded plants to insure proper identification.
